Boards with higher thermal mass, such as those that are thicker, have multiple internal copper layers, or have a large copper ground plane, absorb heat much more slowly. These features act as internal heat sinks, drawing thermal energy away from the surface. To ensure that these complex boards reach the target reflow temperature uniformly across their entire surface, the conveyor speed must be reduced. This provides a longer dwell time in each heated zone, allowing the heat to fully penetrate the board and its components.
